Air Fares are Still Falling
This is the time of year when the real bargains appear. Traditionally a quiet time for airlines before the Easter rush, all sorts of deals are available and tell you where to go to get the best discounts. The market that all airlines chase is the business traveller. British Airways are now using their flat beds on many routes and for overnight travel they are unbeatable. Other carriers are competing on price but the absolute winner at the moment is Virgin Atlantic with their Premium Economy Cabin. You don't pay much more than Economy Class but you get to sit in a dedicated cabin where the seats are often configured as 2-2-2 and as Virgin keep reminding us "You get free champagne all the way across the Atlantic!" Icelandair and Kuwait Airways feature highly as good airlines with attractive business class prices but do look at the prices out of Germany; you will find that British Airways is heavily discounted there.
No Frills Thrill
This is the year that the No-Frills carriers came of age. All the major airlines ignored them for too long. They thought that they were just competition for charter flights. They now realize that they are snapping up the business traveller as well. You can fly to nearly 100 destinations on these new kids on the block, often for as little as £1 and now, belatedly, national airlines are dropping their prices to compete. There is a certain amount of in-fighting as the smaller airlines jostle for market share. We have just lost Buzz and Airlib and more may follow. European regional property prices are being pushed up by the proximity of an airport with a cheap airline. Brits are buying weekend homes in France because budget airlines take them to Brest, Bergerac and La Rochell but they may find themselves stranded if the airlines find that these routes are not profitable and either pull them or dramatically increase the fares. Only time will tell, but if the flights stop, then property prices will fall back.
